Oct. 27 POP MUSIC AND POP STARS
How old is pop music? How did it all begin? Who was the first star? A whimsical tour through the origins of this genre, with samples of well-known and not so well-known melodies, songs and performers.

Nov. 3 CANADA – COLONY TO NATION
The illustrated story of mapping our vast country from 1800 to the present – a period in our history that included invasion, boundary disputes, Confederation, and rebellion.

Nov. 10 DEATH AT SNAKE HILL
Exploring a military cemetery from the War of 1812 – the story of the discovery, exhumation and repatriation of 28 American soldiers, who, accompanied by the U. S. Presidenial Old Guard, were transported back to the United States with full military honours.

Lecturer: Dr. Art Wenk
How movies use techniques of editing, sound, lighting, camera angle, montage, and point of view to tell stories
Mar. 2 HIS GIRL FRIDAY (Howard Hawks, 1940)
How pacing and verbal rhythm create a cinematic narrative that ornaments and sometimes contradicts the written words of the script.
Mar. 9 STAGE COACH (John Ford, 1939)
How editing, choice of camera shots, and lighting turn the conventions of the western into a rich narrative.
Mar. 16 MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (Vincente Minnelli, 1944)
How music – and the circumstances of its performance – create a broader context for the underlying story.
Mar. 23 NORTH BY NORTHWEST (Alfred Hitchcock, 1959)
How point of view allows the director to manipulate the audience’s knowledge in a shifitng play between suspense and surprize.
Mar. 30 ANNIE HALL (Woody Allen, 1977)
How voice-overs, flashbacks, split screen, cartoons and imagined scenes contribute to self-conscious cinematic narrative.
A few words about our Presenters –
DREW WINTERS is a veteran of the Canadian pop music scene, running away from home to join the rock’n’roll circus in 1976. Over the last 30 years, he has toured this country many times, and has recorded his own and other artists’ music on CD’s, including two releases of his own compositions.
ED RUTHERFORD has had a life-long interest in Canadian history. He is a charter member of the Upper Canada Map Society, and has lectured for many years for Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto on subjects related to the mapping of Canada.
DR. RON WILLIAMSON is an archaeologist who has directed over a thousand archaeological assessment, excavation, and planning projects. He has authored many books, including “Toronto: An Illustrated History of its First 12,000 Years”, and “Death at Snake Hill”.
RICHARD LAUTENS has been a photojournalist at the Toronto Star for the past 23 years. He has been a part of several fine art shows and has curated several photography exhibits. He is also a free-lance writer, lecturer, teacher, as well as a full-time husband, father and dog owner.
DR. JOHN KENNEDY was born and educated in Belfast. He came to the University of Toronto in 1972, and, as a psychologist, he has spent many years studying perception, pictures and art.
DR. ARTHUR WENK has had a distinguished career as an author, musicologist, choral condutor, and organist, and has taught at several universities in the United States and Canada. Throughout all these years, Dr. Wenk has had a love afair with the movies and has written reviews and given presentations about films of the silent era, the ‘talkies’ of the 30’s and 40’s, the works of Felini, and Bergman, and the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Woody Allen. A chance to experience some of the things we may not have seen before as we look ‘Into Film’.

Jason will oversee the lecture series program that has become part of Jubilee United Church's learning centre. Jason brings management and entrepreneurial experience to his new appointment. His passions include baking, environmental protection and charitable sponsorship.

Ed Rutherford, Vice Chairman of the Lecture Committee
Ed Rutherford will look after the speakers. Ed is well known in the congregation and most people have attended at least one of his lectures.
