MANCHUL, Marion

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marion Tylee Manchul, peacefully on February 20, 2022 at the age of 94, at the Avalon Retirement Lodge in Orangeville. She was born in Virden, Manitoba in 1927, daughter of the owner of the local hardware store. While attending the University of Manitoba, she met engineering student Edward Manchul, the love of her life, and beloved husband of 68 years. Marion has lived in many cities across the country but always called Toronto home. Marion enjoyed bridge, curling, sewing, knitting and tailoring, and spending winters in Florida. She will be remembered fondly for her fabulous shortbread cookies, her famous back ribs and chili con carne. She is cherished by her two daughters, Lee Ann Manchul and Lynn Manchul-Davey. Her two grandchildren, Megan Devlin and Edward Davey will always remember her as their advocate and friend and she loved them to the moon and back. Marion will be fondly remembered by her nieces Nancy, Tylee, and Mardi, nephews Dick and Bill, son-in-law Michael Devlin, and many grand nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the staff at the Avalon Retirement Lodge, Comfort Keepers, the palliative care team, Kristine and Dr. Bhamber. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. In lieu of flowers, a gift to the charity of your choice in her honour is appreciated. We will miss you, mom. We will miss you Nana. You were our inspiration!

PHALP, Jean

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Phalp, née Brubacher. She passed away peacefully in hospital on January 13, 2022. Until the end she continued to think of others, sharing a laugh and enjoying familiar stories.

Jean was the loving wife of husband Brian Trevor Phalp; beloved mother of Daniel (Leah Yu), Rosemary and David; grandmother to Chloe and Ethan; sister to Sheldon Brubacher (Barb); and predeceased by her parents Ralph and Bella Brubacher, her brothers Claude and Harold Brubacher (late Isabelle) and Gerald Brubacher (Lola), sisters Pauline Graham (James), Grace Waters (late Don), Alice McDonald (late Robert and Jack), Frances Clappison (Philip) and Beatrice Stephenson (Glen).

Jean was born on June 1, 1931 at her home in the community of Sunnyside, now Kitchener. She grew up with her brothers and sisters on the family market garden farm.

After graduating from Galt High School, she moved to Toronto where she attended the Ryerson Institute of Technology Early Childhood Education program, the first of its kind program in Canada, in its inaugural year, where she excelled, winning a scholarship in her second year.

She began her career as a teacher at the Victoria Day Nursery on Jarvis Street in Toronto. The first day care in Ontario (1890), was recognized for the promotion of mental health, and supporting children’s development. Her time there was fondly remembered, and co-workers became life-long friends.

She met her future husband Brian when he came to play badminton at Deer Park Church, where she was involved in social activities. Brian, born in Yorkshire, had graduated from Cambridge, and had worked for several years in London, England as an engineer before immigrating to Toronto, Canada. They were married on June 23, 1962.

The couple moved to Don Mills and raised the family of three. Jean and Brian loved to travel, including annual trips to England to visit his family. Jean returned to teaching nursery school in Don Mills and continued to take great joy in working with children in their formative years. Together they were active members of the Bethesda United Church community where they made many friends.

Sadly, her husband passed away in 1997. Jean did volunteer work and remained active in the Jubilee United Church and in the lives of her family and friends. The birth of her first grandchild Chloe brought her great joy, which was enhanced when her grandson Ethan was born.

She took great pride in her family’s Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and many the links to the Waterloo Region. She had great love and concern for her brothers and sisters and their families. She was a woman who cared deeply for others throughout her life and the family thanks all those who supported and cared for Jean in her final years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to the Red Door Shelter.

COULL, John Robert

Bathed in the warm hues of the rising sun, our beloved John Coull slipped peacefully from this life into the next, following a stroke.

John was born on February 17th, 1951 to parents Margaret and Robert Coull. He grew up in Scarborough, along with his two younger siblings, Doug and Sandra. John discovered a love for music and golf early on, and both passions stayed with him his whole life. In particular, it was jazz and big band that captured his heart strongest; John’s “working music” at home was usually Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson, or Dizzy Gillespie, at maximum volume.

While John was often busy with work or playing trumpet with Toronto big band The Skyliners, he found time for golf as often as he could. Son Colin shared John’s love for golf, and the two played together as often as they could. John loved the annual “Guys’ Golf Trip to Myrtle” with Colin, Doug, and a few of their friends, spending a week golfing in autumnal Myrtle Beach.

John and Brenda (nee Burke) married in 1974, and had two children: Colin (Tori; Kingston and Kenzie) and Cheryl (Jasen; William). John always made time for his children’s activities, including Colin’s Scouting activities and Cheryl’s many dance competitions; he was always an enthusiastic cheering section! When his grandchildren came along John was just as excited, taking them to playgroups and parks, out for Timbits, and learning everything he could about what they enjoyed. He learned a great deal about superheroes (Kingston), princesses (Kenzie), and Star Wars (William), listening happily to everything they taught him.

After a career with the Toronto Police Service and the Ontario Fire Marshalls office, John spent the final years of work with Origin and Cause, Inc. Always eager to solve the mystery, John’s police skills and fire investigation skills kept him curious and determined, eager to apply what he knew to the pursuit of justice and answers. John retired in 2016, making even more time for his greatest passions: his family, his trumpet, and his golf.

While we are all brokenhearted to say goodbye, we are thankful for the time we had together, and all the beautiful memories. Ever in favour of a morning round of golf, John no doubt had an early tee time the sunny morning he left. Hit ‘em straight! We love you.
